Obituary

Homegoing services for Attorney William P. (Butch/Bill) Murphy of Tampa, who passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013, will be held Saturday, January 19th, 11:00 a.m., Greater Mt. Carmel AME Church, 4209 N. 34th Street, Rev. Charles Cloy, Senior Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery. William was born October 15, 1947 to the late Moses and Margaret Murphy. William received his education in the Hillsborough County Public School System graduating from Middleton High School, class of 1965. He was drafted into the armed services in 1969 serving in Vietnam for 2 years. He attended Florida State University where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1974, Master of Social Work in 1975 and Law Degree in 1978. He was a member of the Florida Bar Association and served in the Hillsborough County Court System as a public defender until he started his law practice in 1987, which lasted for over 3 decades. William was a member of Greater Mt. Carmel AME Church since 1993 where he was an active member and a great supporter of his church. He served as church treasurer, attorney and steward. William also enjoyed cooking, reading and watching movies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses Murphy and Margaret Coleman; grandmothers, Mamie Blue and Ada Spencer; aunt, Elexzennia Hayes; uncles, James Blue and Clyde Murphy. He leaves to cherish his fond and loving memories with his brothers, Leroy Stokes (Joyce) and Zannie Black (Beverly); nieces, Pashen Black, Twanda Gray (Emery) and Master Sgt. Sonya Black; nephews, Ramon Black (Carolyn), Zannie Black, Jonathan Stokes, Leroy Stokes, Jr. (Jeanette) and Eric Stokes; cousins, Rosa Carr (Elijah), Betty Bell (Grady), Regina Brugess (Randolph), Roy Lee Kilpatrick, Jr., Nathaniel Woodard, James Isaac, Randolph Haynes (Patricia), Elaine Chandler (Pete), Brooklyn, NY and Sandra Delpeche, Brooklyn, NY; special friend, Natalie Prothro; secretary, Jonda Solomon and working associate, Valerie Bailey; his Mt. Carmel Church family; and other sorrowing relatives and friends all who will dearly miss him. The viewing will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, January 18th from 5 to 7 p.m. and the family will receive from 6 to 7 p.m. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church on Saturday for the service.
