Willie Campbell, Sr. was born in Chipley, Florida on October 21, 1932, to the late Robert Lee and Alice Mae Campbell. Willie was the fifth child of seven children born to the union. Willie T. attended the public schools in Chipley and graduated from T.J. Roulac High School in 1951. After high school, he attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, where he met Lillie Moore Campbell on a double date to an ice cream parlor. He told her that night they would marry and shortly after on June 2, 1952 they married in Tallahassee. After graduating from college he taught school in Thomasville, Georgia and began working on his Masters Degree. He received his Master's Degree in 1957 and then moved his growing family to Moore Haven, Florida. He continued his teaching career in Moore Haven at Booker T. Washington School (k-12). He was a well-respected teacher and coach. After 11 years of working in Moore Haven in 1968 Willie and Lillie relocated their still growing family to Tampa, Florida. Willie worked for the Hillsborough County School Board for 28 years. He held a teaching position at Dunbar Elementary was the Dean of Boys at George Washington Junior High School and served as the Assistant Principal of Brandon High School until his retirement in 1994. At an early age Willie professed his belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist church in Chipley. He continued his membership at First Baptist Church of Moore Haven, where he was ordained as a deacon. He was always a man of faith but often expressed that faith through means other than organized religion. Some years after moving to Tampa he became a member of First Baptist Church of College Hill and subsequently became Chairman of the Deacon Board. He was an active member of the church involving him in many activities including chairperson of the committee responsible for the new building addition. He later joined New Testament Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member until his death. Often referring to his own father's guidance as a businessman, Willie began his property acquisition business in 1968, which he concentrated on after his retirement and developed it into a profitable real estate enterprise. He was a caring and generous landlord often supporting families who needed assistance by reducing rent, or not collecting rent until tenants "got back on their feet." He was known to lend a helping hand to family members and friends throughout the community. All who knew him knew that he would go out of his way to help those who first tried to help themselves. Willie was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the Masonic Lodge, New Hope Subordinate, Lodge No. 450 at Okeechobee, Florida. In his younger years, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and coaching basketball. When relaxing at home, you would frequently find him watching his beloved western movies, but his true passion was traveling. He traveled oversees with many of his children and to all 50 states, frequently by car, including one very long and fondly remembered car trip to Alaska.
