Obituary

Homegoing services for Mr. Willie Douglas O'Hara of Tampa, Florida who passed away on Friday, August 2, 2013, will be held Saturday, August 10th, 2:00 p.m. at St. John Progressive MB Church with Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, pastor officiating. Willie Douglas O'Hara was born on October 17, 1943 in Clermont, Florida. He was preceded in death by both of his parents Willie and Edith O'Hara and brothers, William Tarrant and Elder Richard Louis O'Hara. He was educated in the local schools of Hillsborough County and New Smyrna Beach, Florida. He and his brother Elder Richard Louis O' Hara founded a quartet in Tampa with several other teenagers names the Junior Gospel Tornadoes and they sang God's praises for a number of years and Douglas was set aside for a deacon at age 17. He moved to Kansas City, and was employed by Isis Food Warehouse. He was ordained as a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church. He continued to minister through music with a local quartet. He moved back to Florida after a number of years and was employed with the Hillsborough County School System. He served as a deacon, sang in the male chorus and was a member of the brotherhood at Peace Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.C. Goins and Rev. W. F. Leonard. He subsequently moved to Greenville, SC where he served as a deacon at Fairforest Baptist Church. In 1996 Douglas moved back to Tampa where he attended the Phyllis Busansky Senior Center and was appointed to the advisory committee. Douglas was a member of St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Bartholomew Banks, Sr. He continued his lifelong passion for singing with the male chorus and Choir #1. He was also a member of the Sunrise drug support ministry until his health began to fail. Survivors include three sisters: Daisy Jones of the home, Evelyn Jenkins of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Pearl Graham and husband Nathaniel of Edgewater, Florida and a sister in love Dorothy Hill and husband Rev. Donal Hill of Greenville, SC; nephews, SSG Mitchell Henderson, Sr. and wife Kim, Daniel Henderson, Chester Henderson and wife Orchid all of Greenville, SC, Dr. Ernest H. Johnson and wife Mattie of Raleigh, NC, Dennis Johnson of Daytona Beach, FL, Arthur Johnson and Elder Earl Jones of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Brian Jones of Orlando, FL and Paul O'Hara of Cross City, FL; nieces, LaTanya Jackson and husband SGM (Retired) William of Olympia, WA, Sabrina Hill, Crystal Martin and husband Otis and Thelma Henderson all of Greenville, SC, Lillie Johnson of Tampa, FL, Karen Allen, Norma Lawson and husband, Elder John Lawson of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Paulette Curtis of Cross Hill, FL. Wanda Tarrant of Holly Hill, Eva Mae McCord and husband, Franklin of Center Hill, FL. He was known as "Uncle Douglas" to many: Rev, Dr. Bartholemew and Lady Vanessa Banks, Shirley Minor, Lois Worlds, Gwen Leggett and family, Rev. Otis Cooper and family, Virgil Brooks, Elder Horace Canty, Deborah Leverett and family, Clyde Smith, Jr., Lois Foote and husband, Bruce; special friends, Patricia Cooper, Patricia Spann, Lilla Cambridge, Laura Watman, Ruth Harvis and Cecil Fleming. Special thanks to the Lifepath Hospice burgundy team, the St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church family, Fairforest Baptist Church, Heart to Heart Baptist and Jubilee Baptist Church of Greenville, SC. Willie Douglas O'Hara known to many as simply Doug served God with commitment and dedication. He ministered through song from a young man until his death. He is remembered as a humble servant who declared through song that he would run on and see what the end would be. He fought the good fight, he kept the faith and he has finished the race. The visitation will be held at Aikens Funeral Home on Friday, August 9th, from 5-8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. The friends and family are asked to meet at the Church on Saturday for the service.
